The bathroom and the shower room have heated towel rails. These have been fitted because even in the high summer towels remain damp. These are on a timer to come on from 06:00 to 10:00 and 18:00 to 22:00. We suggest that, particularly in the summer, you keep the doors to the bathroom and shower room closed. The radiators can get very hot so please be careful.

The full instructions can be found in the full manual here. Please use the extractor fan when using the hob. This is activated by pulling the extractor unit towards you.

Dish-Washer
To operate the dishwasher, fill the holder with powder. Press the on switch, press the 45° button, press the START button. Then close the door. The unit is very quiet but a red light shining on the floor indicates that the unit is on. When the red light goes off the dishwasher cycle has finished.

Activities

Most people's reason for coming to Cannes is to relax on the beach and soak up the sun and if you are looking for a private beach we highly recommend our favourite Mademoiselle Gray.

However in case your looking for other things to do in and around the area, here are a few suggestions.

Tennis

Tennis Montfleury
21 avenue Beausejour

The courts can be booked over the phone and are available as follows:

Sunday and bank holidays(jours feries): 09:00 - 19:00

A good selection of bikes at reasonable prices

An early morning ride around the bay and the Cap d'Antibes is a lovely way to start the day!

See their web site for opening times

Monaco

Monaco has a lot offer for a day out from Cannes and is only an hour or so on the train from Cannes.

The second smallest country in the world packs a lot in:

  • Musee Oceanographique de Monaco
  • The Motor Museum
  • The Exotic Gardens
  • The Casino Square
  • The Palace
  • The Japanese Gardens
  • The Casino

Iles Lerins

The Iles Lerins off the coast of Cannes are delightful to visit and we highly recommend a trip over to them during your stay. There are two main islands the Ile Saint Marguerite and the Ile Saint Honrat. The ile Saint Honrat is home to Lérins Abbey. To quote the Cannes Tourist Office: "The island was founded by Saint Honorat in the 5th century. It exudes an air of spirituality and boasts vestiges of the past (monastery, fortifications, chapels). The island is owned by a commune of Cistercian monks who grow vines and produce a reputable wine."

Also within the abbey is the La Tonnelle restaurant. A delightful restaurant set on the North side of the island.

Villa Ephrussi

Villa Ephrussi and its gardens is one of the most magnificent villas on the whole of the Cote d'Azur and is open to the public. The Villa Ephrussi was built in the early part of the 20th century with commencing in 1905 and Baroness Beatrice Ephrussi (nee de Rothschild) moved in in 1912.

The villa, both exterior and interiors, and the gardens are equisite and strongly recommend a visit.

The villa is 30 minutes on foot from Beaulieu sur Mer station and there is also parking at the villa

Cannoeing

Canoeing In the Baie de Cannes - what fun. Canoes can be hired at the Palm Beach end of the Croisetter for a very reasonable €35 per day from Kayak iles Lerins.

Running

Running If you are a runner it does not get much better than running along the Croissette in Cannes. My usual 5 kms route can be found here. For something longer Theoule and back is almost exactly a half marathon!

Restaurants

As well as wonderful places to relax the private beaches are great places to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. We list our two favourites first but to be honest all of the private beaches have upped their game over the past couple of years and we have had good to great experiences at all of the ones we have tried. As opening times vary through the year please check their web site for details of opening times.

Directly next to La Goeland, so the second beach next to the Plage Publique, this is a great beach restaurant with lovely food and service. It is particularily good for vegetarians and vegans with good plant based choices on the menu. A great wine list with a number of wines by the glass including Whispering Angel sister wine to the amazing (and amazingly priced) Garrus. Highly recommended.

The first private beach as you walk away from the Majestic. This is a family run beach. Breakfast is lovely (see above). The beach resturant has been completely refurbished in the winter of 2020 and is lovely. The service is friendly and the food reasonable though not that varied if you are planning on spending every day on the beach here. We feel it has slightly lost its way at the moment and that a revamp of the menu is needed to bring it up to date.

Additionally the transats (beach loungers) are much better value than most beaches. Transats at the Mademoiselle Gray are 50% more expensive

This restaurant is open almost the whole year round.

Changed again but they still don't get it. They have got rid of the dividers on the beach, we had to pay for the beach in advance (in case we ran off without paying I assume) and somehow did not feel welcome. The restaurant now appears to be serving just sushi and puddings, very odd. There are better beaches. Try Plage de Martinez, Miramar Plage or Rado Beach!!

This outpost of the famous Petite Maison at Nice is moving from the Majestic to the newly refurbished complex at Palm Beach. Assuming that it has stayed the same then the food is truly superb. The only negative is that in the 10 years that it was at the Majestic the menu did not change. Highly recommended. Booking in advance essential.

A large pizza and pasta restaurant at the beginning of the old town. I think I first ate at this restaurant in 1983 and I have never been disappointed. That said it has changed hands now and was not quite the amazing value that it was. Though you can still get a pizza and a beer for €17. It does exactly what it says on the tin. It is not fine dining and does not have pretensions to be but the food is good and the service is quick and excellent. Great, pasta, pizza and risotto. The restaurant is great value, extremely friendly and really buzzy.

An odd mixture of "plates" (you can see the menu here) but quite interesting and in general a welcome addition to the Cannes eating scene. You can however take the ferry over, which runs every hour on the hour between 08:00 and 18:00. The setting of the restaurnat is delightful right on the north shore of Saint-Honorat and the food delicious. The menu can be found here. Highly recommended by either canoe or ferry!!

A good selection of vegatarian and vegan options. The menu can be found here.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Of course, there is the Palm d'Or in The Martinez with two Michelin stars. We have not yet eaten there, and I am not sure we will! The menu looks pretentious. To quote the Michelin online guide "In the sumptuous Art Deco setting of the Hotel Martinez, diners look down on La Croisette from a gastronomic peak. The chef creates spectacular cuisine that is sunny and creative, justly deserving of a Palme d'Or!" Need I say more!

The train line along the coast makes almost all the towns of the Côte d'Azur very accessible. Monaco is about an hour and 15 minutes by train but the scenary is so lovely that the journey passes quickly. Conde Nast Traveller Lists the "Riviera Railway" from Cannes to Ventimiglia as one of the best 10 in the world.

This is a bit different and may not be for everybody. But we think it is great fun. It is a table dd'hote restaurant. So starters are various hors d'oeuvres, which are placed on your table and you can help yourself. There is no choice of main course and then to finish a selection of puddings. We visited for the first time in October 2017 and loved it.

That said Antibes has literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from. TripAdvisor lists 526 as of July 2021.

Linen table cloths, fabulous service and, if you want, a menu to match (€1,300 for a sea food platter) but also a lunch set menu of two courses for €23.00. Be warned the wine list is a bit toppy, starting with a bottle of rose at €70.00 or €8 a glass. We would very much recommend La Maree.

This, for me, is one of the best restaurants in France and should be visited at least once in life time. Art (and I mean art Picasso, Matisse etc) hangs everywhere, accepted in payment in years gone by for meals taken by the artist at this 100 year old restaurant. It still retains the character and charm of a bygone era. The charm of the restaurant is evident in the service and the food. Staff are delightful and efficient, the food amazing and the open air terrace is a wonder to dine on. Booking Essential.

Harry's Bar
Port Canto
Last tried: June 2021
This is not an out post of our favourite bar in the world, Harry's Bar Venice (just minutes from our apartment) there but an out post of the Parisian bar of the same name founded in 1911.

This won't be for everyone as it is a 2kms walk from the apartment in the newly refurbished Port Canto area of Cannes but if you fancy a stroll down the Croisette followed by a cocktail or a beer away from the hubbub of central Cannes, then this is worth a visit. Opened in the second week of June 2021, the service is charming and the drinks reasonably prices at €16 for a cocktail. We will go back, as it suits us down to the ground!

Carlton Hotel - Currently (Summer 2021) for refurbishment.
Last tried: August 2017
If you are going in the summer and can sit outside as we did in the summer of 2017, then this is a great bar, buzzy and wonderful people watching but avoid the inside, it can be likened to sipping a cocktail in a shopping mall.

Five Hotel

Last tried: October 2020
This bar on top of the Five Hotel, which is just a stroll from the apartment, has been redecorated and we found it a bit cold but it might be better in summer. On our last visit in October 2020 we found it a bit sleazy, so not sure I would recommend it.

La Chunga
24 rue La Tour Maubourg, 06400, Cannes,

Opposite the Martinez. This place is fun. Serves food but we have not tried it yet! It is a bit of Cannes institution and has been around since 1958. The Daily Telegraph best describes it "Opposite the Hotel Martinez, La Chunga considers itself a plush, louche Cannes institution, quite correctly. It starts out, early in the evening, as a standard Italo-Provencal restaurant (though with some non-standard prices). Later, it evolves into a piano and live music bar for a clientele sufficiently grown-up to know what a whisky sour is, and sufficiently rich to have some very pretty company to drink it with. Things can get frisky, even sleazy, in the early hours when folk from the festivals roll in."

Shops

The main shopping in Cannes is on the Croisette and the rue d'Antibes and the streets running between them. Though there are some interesting shops to be found on the streets to the north of the rue d'Antibes. It is bounded on the West by rue du Marechal Joffre and on the East where the rue d'Antibes meets the Boulevard d'Alsace.

Where to start? Cannes has it all. From the most famous names in Haute Couture - you will find Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent, to name a just few, on the Croisette. There are high end jewellers and watch makers (like Hublot on the Croisette. The famous rue d'Antibes, which is only 50 metres from the apartment is home to countless well know shops and small boutiques alike offering everything from "High Street" fashion (Zara), small specialist shoe shops, of which there are many, to works of art, antiques, home furnishings and beach wear.

Also on the rue d'Antibes you will find FNAC and Darty.

Absolutely not to be missed is the Forville market (Place du Marché Forville; every morning except Mon). To quote Anthony Peregrine of The Daily Telegraph, "Here is a vast Provençal larder where asceticism comes to die. If you are self-catering or planning a picnic, then this is the spot to head for." There are a myriad of cafes around the market so why not set off early, take breakfast and spend some time in one of the most splendid markets I have seen in my 40 year of visiting and living in France. This is not just a fruit and vegetable market. There is every food stuff imaginable, fresh pasta, dried spices and herbs, fish (of course), a salt stall, a mushroom seller and fresh flowers. This market has to be seen to be believed.

You can find almost everything in Cannes if you search long enough! Just let yourself wander around the streets and you will be amazed at what you can find. Happy shopping!

The Place Gambetta is the place to do food shopping.
